Toyota’s Newest Generation Prius May Arrive in Brazil
The fifth generation of Toyota’s Prius, a vehicle that’s fully electric, may arrive in Brazil. Toyota has already registered the vehicle in Brazil, which has fueled speculation. Recent editions of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) magazine have included industrial designs and patents relating to the electric car.
It’s expected that the plug-in hybrid version of the new Prius will arrive in Brazil in 2024. However, there is no official confirmation as to when the new car will return to the Brazilian market, as the model was discontinued in Brazil in 2021.
The current Prius is one of the most efficient vehicles on the market, according to the European Union. The hybrid vehicle by the Japanese automaker can achieve a fuel efficiency of 200km/l of gasoline in its plug-in version.
The mechanic behind the new Prius
The fifth-generation Prius’s plug-in hybrid version features a gasoline-powered 2.0 engine that produces 152 horsepower and an electric motor in the rear that generates 163 horsepower. Together, they create 223 horsepower and can take the Prius from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds with four-wheel drive.
According to official numbers, the plug-in version of the Prius expends an average of half a liter of gasoline when kept at a speed of 100 km/h for an hour after being recharged in a wall socket—hence the “200 km/l” consumption rate. The CO2 emissions stand at 11 grams per kilometre, while the pure electric mode’s consumption fluctuates between 11.4 and 12.6 kWh per 100 km.
The new Prius’s battery remains under the back seat but now features lithium-ion cells, compared to the previous generation’s nickel-metal hydride batteries. Its capacity has increased from 8.8 kWh to 13.6 kWh, extending the electric mode’s range by 50% from 63 km to 95 km. The total range has increased to 1250km.
In terms of efficiency, the new Toyota Prius ranks higher than the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4Matic Plug-in Hybrid, which consumes 0.4 L per hundred km (around 250 km/l).
In conclusion, the fifth generation of Toyota’s Prius is a significant step up from its predecessor and is expected to be a hit in Brazil, offering greater efficiency, more features, and better performance.
